Summer Bloom is a wooden botanical artwork made using a combination of wood mosaic, carving and resin work.
The background is made from pieces of teak arranged into a radiating mosaic pattern. The grain and natural variations in the wood create a geometric base, against which the softer forms of the flowers are carved.
The composition features sunflowers along with smaller flowers, leaves and stems. Each flower is carved into the wood and then filled with coloured powder resin. The resin gives the flowers their colour while still allowing some of the wood and carved surface beneath to show through. Its slight transparency also changes with the light, giving the flowers a different depth and appearance from different angles.
The piece brings together two very different kinds of forms — the structured, geometric pattern of the wood mosaic and the more irregular shapes of flowers and foliage.
Much of the character of the work comes from the wood itself: its grain, colour variations and the small differences that appear as each piece is made.

Handmade product
Each piece in the Malar collection is made by hand, from arranging the individual pieces of the wood mosaic to carving the flowers and filling them with resin. Small variations in the grain, carving, colour and resin are a natural part of the process.
