What you will learn: We’ll talk about wood as a material and transition into how to plan projects and select materials. We'll then move on to making a project chosen by you from the ones suggested under.

This course is jam-packed, and intensive, and emphasizes furniture-making and tool use. We teach traditional carpentry that uses interlocking wood-to-wood joinery without the use of hardware.
At the end of the class, we will be handing out a resource list to help you set up your own workshop and practice further.
After this class you will be able to:
  • Plan a woodworking project

  • Identify the types of wood and understand their application

  • Calculate quantity and be able to buy your material

  • Stock selection: How to pick, where to buy hardwood, and how to work with defects.

  • Layout & divide the project into components. Prepare a cut list.

  • Understand manual and power tools and use them for construction.

  • Joinery design: The dos and don t's of long-lived joinery techniques.

  • Joineries introduced: Dowel, Mitre with splines, Dado, Box/Finger and Dovetail, Bridle, Castle, Mortise and Tenon, and Cross Laps.

  • Sanding: What to do by hand, what to do by machine, and which abrasives/machines to buy.

  • Project assembly: What to glue, how much glue to use, and how to remove the glue.

  • Finish your project with appropriate finishing materials

You will receive a tools and stationary equipment buyers guide which includes vendor details and brand/model recommendations. Purchasing the best equipment that will give you the biggest bang for your buck. We also include vendors for purchasing wood in this guide.

Suggested projects: Boxes, organizers for desk/jewelry/watch/make-up, etc., laptop stands, footstools, lamps (floor/table), planters, pegboards, and spice racks that the participant must choose from the design below. Minor changes in the given design are possible. These are curated keeping a beginner's skill level into consideration and that design allows flexibility of using 2 - 4 types of joints within the making of one object which allows for maximum learning.
